The objective is to develop models for predicting otter latrine site location along riverine habitat and to test the models to determine their value in predicting occurrence of otter latrines in various riverine habitats. This will identify important prospective of otter habitats, determinants of occurrence and their habitat use Aarati BasnetThis research recorded otter signs in the Chaudhar River and Kalikich Lake in Shuklaphanta National Park, Nepal. We also surveyed the perceptions of otters held by local community members and investigated the distribution and status of otters. The study also explored the threats to otter populations in Shuklaphanta National Park, which included water pollution, hunting, forest fires, loss of wetland habitat, and overall loss of prey. A majority of the local people supported the conservation of otters.1 active Otter Specialist Group member6 active Otter Specialist Group membersWe are conducting a population census through verified, triangulated citizen science records from the community of otter-watchers, as an update to the 2017 census N Sivasothi1 active Otter Specialist Group member1 active Otter Specialist Group memberThe Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) was very widespread in China but has undergone a dramatic national decline. Miraculously remnant population can be found close to major cities. We launched a project in the busy Pearl River Delta of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong region, which is one of the busiest megacities in the world with nearly 10 million people. We are working with mangrove nature reserves both sides of the coastal bay with otters, to understand the population size and cross-border movement of this highly threatened population, and hopefully use otter as a flagship for mangrove ecosystem conservation Bosco P. L. ChanWWF-Hong Kong has launched an otter conservation project in Hong Kong, with a focus in the stronghold Mai Po Nature Reserve and Deep Bay wetlands. We are working with a multi-faceted approach to collect more scientific information about the population and spatial use of otters through collaboration, engagement and public education. Our works cover camera trapping, sign survey, genetic analyses, conservation dog trial, citizen science and a series of awareness-raising activities with various partners. Sign of the two species(Aonyx capensis and Hydrictus macucollis) is recorded, namely spraint sites, tracks, rolling places, runs, and dens, as well as any otters seen Sonja KruegerThis study seeks to investigate previously unresearched aspects related to the behavioural ecology of African clawless otter including the social function of latrine sites, the olfactory chemistry of otter spraint, and the physical landscape characteristics that drive latrine site selection of this species Trevor McIntyreAfrican clawless otters (Aonyx capensis) occur in a range of habitat types associated with different climate regimes, prey availability, habitat structure and levels of human impact. While there overall distribution is relatively well known, little information is available on population densities, or how densities (or other important aspects, such as fitness and behaviour) are impacted by habitat characteristics and human disturbance. The widespread occurrence of this species makes it a suitable candidate to investigate such associations, not only to get species-specific information important for conservation and management, but also to generate knowledge on how medium-sized mammalian carnivores are likely to be affected by anthropogenically-driven habitat alterations. This study aims to investigate the population densities, condition, trophic niche and activity patters of African clawless otters in a range of environments, by making use of recently developed models applied to camera trap survey data, as well as more established methods of assessing condition and trophic niche. The species is very rarely reported in the country, but in addition to an actual sighting of this species, the survey team observed a limited number of otter sign, including tracks, scat, ice diving holes, snow diving marks, snow wallows, territorial marks, and prey remains at widely distributed sites. Prakash CHETTRI and Melissa SAVAGE We report the findings of a survey for otters along a major river in central Bhutan. The river bears various names in different stretches along its run, including Mochhu, Phochhu, Punatsangchhu and Sunkosh. Belwal Field surveys were conducted in reaches of the Kosi, Ramganga, Khoh, and Song rivers, supported by semi-structured interviews conducted with members of local communities to collect qualitative data on views and perceptions of otter species. In addition, community-based otter awareness camps were organized for local youths.Pushpinder Singh JAMWAL, Jigmit TAKPA, Pankaj CHANDAN, Melissa SAVAGE We report the findings of the first survey for Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) from the Upper Indus River and several of its tributaries in Leh and Kargil Districts, India. We observed indirect sign of otter presence on two of the four rivers surveyed, but otter abundance appears to be low in the area. Stacy Cotey1 active Otter Specialist Group member16 active Otter Specialist Group members3 active Otter Specialist Group membersDevelopement and improvement oft the Footprint Identification Technology for the Eurasian otter (Lutra Lutra). Successful conservation and management of rare species often requires reliable information on population size and trends. This data is often hard to obtain, especially for cryptic or nocturnal species. The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is such an elusive species of management concern. Current standard monitoring approaches do only provide information of the species distribution over a larger area. Some studies provide population estimates, often derived from DNA analysis. This approach however requires expertise, is expensive and therefore often limits a wider use. Identifying otter individuals by the shape of their footprints has shown promising results in some case studies and can potentially be a cost-effective non-invasive alternative. The award-winning Footprint Identification Technique (FIT) is a standardized approach in gathering and analyzing geometrical profiles of animal footprints that enables to distinguish between individuals and use this information to provide reliable population estimates. FIT is already established for many highly endangered species with a positive identification reliability above 90%. In a preliminary study FIT algorithms have been successfully developed on a small dataset of 12 captive otter individuals, also achieving identific ation accuracies above 90%. This PhD Project aims to enlarge this dataset in order to further improve the algorithms. Once successfully trained, the algorithms will be tested on a free ranging otter population. The obtained population estimate will be cross validated with another noninvasive population estimate approach e.g. DNA Microsatellite analyzes. The main goal of this study is to successfully train and test FIT algorithms for the Eurasian otter. In addition, it also aims to further improve the FIT methodology Frederick Kistner2 active Otter Specialist Group members 3 active Otter Specialist Group members3 active Otter Specialist Group members1 active Otter Specialist Group member1 active Otter Specialist Group member1 active Otter Specialist Group member2 active Otter Specialist Group members2 active Otter Specialist Group members2 active Otter Specialist Group members4 active Otter Specialist Group members6 active Otter Specialist Group membersWe are monitoring the otter population in Sweden by the standard method of spraints surveys Susanne BackeWe collect ca 200 otters/year, most of them traffic killed.
