Actually, with the level of intellectual interest in otters growing rapidly, as it is, I expect we'll see some big breakthroughs this year. The signs are good that this will be a great year for both otters and the science of otters. Hopefully for otter-lovers too!

Thank you for your wishes! It wasn't otter class, but here's a fact about otters I learned recently:

Apparently, Otters are used in human fishing in some parts of the world to help lure fish into human nets!
From wikipedia on the Otter page: "For many generations, fishermen in southern Bangladesh have bred smooth-coated otters and used them to chase fish into their nets. [...] this traditional use of domesticated wild animals is still in practice in the district of Narail, Bangladesh."

I hope they got alot of fish after a good day's work!

You sound like an otter?

A transitional step that many humans must take in the healing process. Much of humanity has been poisoned to the extent that they cannot enjoy real food, real water, or real conversation, let alone that pinnacle of reality, the otter. For such sick creatures, mere like is a necessary precursor to the more accurate and appropriate response, which can only be love.

I'm so glad this site is still up because I don't know who else to cry with. The two river otters at my zoo passed away last week and I didn't know until I saw the caution tape blocking the way to their exhibit and they don't know why they died but they were 4 and 6 years old and I just don't know if I can be the same. Every trip to the zoo is going to be missing something now. I'm never going to watch them roll around in their sleep butting into each other again. Or watch them do loops around their swimming area eating at the food they get out of their toys ever again.
The zoo may get new otters I can share new memories with but I'll never get to experience those two otters ever again and it's really not ok at all and I don't know what to do with this feeling.
Sorry to leave a sad post on the visiting thread but I didn't want to make a whole new one for this.

Ottercine was pretty recent, and there was a link to that thread all around Anon Cafe so that could have pulled in some people.
There is, of course, the fact that otters are neat and people would want to find places to talk about otters, which I'm sure plays an important role.
Also, and this may just be my own personal experience, it seems that the dust is finally starting to settle properly from the shutdown of 8chan and the bunker diaspora. Things have been stable for a while, and that lets people communicate to each other where everyone landed. That helps whenever anyone on one board say "what ever happened to /otter? I'm having a bad day and would like to look at some otters", as other people can point them to where we are now. I haven't seen a lot of that happening for otterchat specifically, but I have seen it for other boards so it could be having an impact.

I wanna say a little more about this because it's important to me.. I've always sorta believed that there's a creator, but I was never really sure about it regarding who he is and what he wants. So some years ago, around 2017 I'd say, I began to think more about the purpose of life and existence, and it made me sad because I was just confused by it all. I mean what's the point if it's all transient and we'll all be dust? everything we do is in vain if all that exists will perish. So it was pretty depressing thinking about that, and I couldn't really stop thinking about it either.
That all started to change four years ago in 2018. That was the year I discovered otters and saw the beauty in them. I began to love them, passionately, and I still do to this day. Then, one day something occurred to me, and I asked myself the question: "How can I love otters and not love the one who created them?"
And that question made sense for me to ask myself because I already knew there has to have been someone who created us. Now at that time, I had already learned a little bit about Zoroastrianism, especially its teachings about otters and their sanctity. Obviously that appealed to me, but I then decided to look into it further, especially at its core message. And that was what fascinated me the most, because I noticed so many parallels to Islam (which by then I had also started learning about) that I started to think this might even be the same religion, or from the same origin anyway. Not only is it the oldest known monotheistic religion, but it's also a revealed religion (founded by a prophet called Zarathustra). There's daily prayers, heaven and hell, judgement day, and even the bridge that the souls must cross. And that thought was pretty much confirmed, because of it being one of the basics of Islamic belief that God sent prophets to every people throughout time to teach them about monotheism. That was a turning point in my life as the pieces all started to fit together and I finally began to understand. There is a God who created us, and he wants us to live a way of life that is pleasing to him. He created an eternal paradise in the Hereafter which he describes as gardens beneath which rivers flow .. I probably don't have to tell you guys what we're gonna find in those rivers.
I've been practicing for about three years now, I'm not depressed or confused about our purpose anymore. My life has found its meaning now and I'm content with it, all thanks to God who made the otters. This has been something personal and maybe a little long, so thank you for reading.

Sea otter, probably. They're some of my favorite otters, they're so well adapted to their environment, they are a key part of maintaining kelp forests, and they're just plain cute.

Oh wow, that's a tough one. Like otternon said, sea otters are a top tier choice to be sure. However, I might have to go with a Eurasian River Otter living in Scotland, they always look so comfy in the lochs. I don't have any pictures on hand, but I've seen some great ones. What about you?

I did this, and suffice to say, it was amazing. We were maybe two feet from the otters, I could've reached out and touched them. Of course I didn't, but they were right there. And the otters were, of course, super adorable, and also really energetic and inquisitive. We weren't allowed to video the actual painting process, but it was just phenomenal. I don't have words to describe it, it's surprisingly difficult. Usually if you see an otter in a zoo, there's either the layer of glass, or a good distance between you and the otter, but that wasn't the case here. The otters were right there, I could hear them make little noises to express themselves and while they ate the fish given to persuade them to paint. I've never experienced anything like that in all my life, it was totally unlike any other experience I've ever had with otters, limited as those have admittedly been in real life. And now I have three paintings that I got to take home with me, I'm going to get them framed. I'm at my computer right now, but tomorrow I'll have to remember to post images of the paintings from my phone to show y'all. But yeah, amazing doesn't quite cover it, but it's still the closest I can really describe it as. Otters just make life better.

No need for a video, as your post put me right there! Thanks for sharing, anon. Though I am curious, is there a reason you can't film the experience?

Also, I hope you do post the paintings once you get them all framed!

>> No.3695

>>3694

>reason you can't film the experience

Admittedly, the area in which they do the painting doesn't look like a great home for otters, and they don't want to misrepresent the area in which the otters live online. I was concerned about this myself at first, because I certainly don't want otters to be living in a bad area, but the otts have a great deal of space outside of the area for painting, with a pond and whatnot. The painting just occurs in a smaller area because it's done by convincing the otters to walk through paint onto paper, after which the otters can go into water to clean themselves off, and so the space needs to be small to ensure that they get onto both the paint and the paper. Of course, if the otters don't want to paint, they don't have to, and they can go easily from the area where the painting is done back outside where they stay the rest of the time. They just don't want to misrepresent the conditions that the otters are in. If that's all that you saw, where they do the painting, you might be concerned, but there is much more to where the otters stay that is healthy for them to live in. And here, I totally forgot about posting the pictures, let me go do that really quickly.

It's so hard to pick one! If I had to decide, I really like Nova's tail stroke on her's, which might put it in first place, though Oscar's also has some really nice handprints. I also like the other one that I got, but I wasn't there for its creation, so it holds slightly less importance for me.

>framing

I really do need to do that soon. I've just been so busy lately, but I don't want to risk the paintings getting hurt, and I'd like to display them as decoration

>neat to learn

Isn't it? I never would've known anything like that, but now I do! And the best part is, I went to see the otters with a friend of mine who I had gone camping with in the area, and now we have an inside joke where we'll make a sound like a frustrated otter if we're frustrated at something.

I hope that some day, I will be chillin by a river and an otter will come up to me with that expression as a way to say hello to me. Probably wont happen, since there aren't many otters in my area and they should be warry of people, but it would be nice to get a hello from an otter.

That really is the dream, isn't it? Of course it's best for otters to not get too close to people as a rule, but just one experience with a wild otter would be like magic

Ottmin's reasons are their own, but after the cafe shut down so suddenly I'm quite glad we have our own place and didn't have to scramble for a new home. Plus it's quite cozy here, it's our own place with our own rules and cool people who think otters are neat.
